That little lie—“I don’t have data”—is doing more damage than you think. Here’s how to turn your numbers into strategy that sells.
I hear it all the time “I just don’t think I have enough data”.
This comes from people who have barely 200 followers on Instagram & people who have almost 3,000.
What people really mean when they say or think that is, “I’m not getting enough clicks or making enough sales to even have numbers to look at”.
And please hear me when I say this – your data is MORE than link clicks, sales, or DMs saying “I’m in!”
Today I’m here to break the stronghold that has you telling yourself you don’t have the data.
Because when you start seeing your data as valuable is when the breakthrough happens to notice how & when people buy.
🤔 Do You REALLY Not Have Data?
First, let’s tackle this sentence you’re telling yourself.
Unless you are a brand new business owner, JUST started your email list, or JUST posted your first ever Instagram post, you have data.
Here are my baselines for “enough data” to start looking for patterns within your content:
- 12+ Instagram posts / reels
- 8+ emails
- 8+ blog posts
- 8+ podcast episodes / YouTube videos
Because there is the reality that 3 emails or 2 podcast episodes won’t help you start noticing patterns. But, they are still data points you are beginning to collect!
💬 What Telling Yourself, “I Don’t Have Data” is Really Doing
Now that we agree you have some data, let’s talk about what telling yourself you don’t have data is really doing.
All it does is minimize the results that are happening.
On top of that, you start
➡️ convincing yourself that the work you’re doing really doesn’t matter.
➡️ believing this “little business” you’ve poured your heart & soul into is really just a hobby.
➡️ telling yourself your newest idea probably would never work.
And all of that simply isn’t true.
I have yet to find a client who truly has NO data.
Now, you might not have link clicks or sales happening, but that doesn’t mean you’re sitting there with nothing.
You still have data that’s ready to help you make the best decisions for how to sign clients from Instagram.
👀 What Your Data Can Show You
Okay, so if you aren’t getting the link clicks, what can your data actually help you do?
I’m all about helping you use your data to learn more about your business so that you can make confident, informed decisions in half the time.
So, let’s talk about the decisions you can spend less time worrying about by leaning into your numbers.
On Instagram:
👉 Look to see which individual posts are getting the most Profile Visits.
Then, start looking to see if these posts are:
- Carousels or Reels
- Storytelling, Testimonials, Educational, or Polarizing types of posts
- Connected to the same content pillar
Digging into your data in this depth will help you not only notice patterns, but start to create your own “template” for what type of content sends people to check out your profile.
👉 Another data point to track for each individual post is Saves.
Your posts with lots of saves are filled with information your people know they are going to want to come back to again.
These topics or ideas would be great to repurpose into emails, blogs, podcasts, or YouTube videos.
🤷♀️ Why Should You Care?
You’re a busy business owner. Why should you worry about adding one more thing onto your plate?
Starting to look at your data gives you the details you need to make content creation easier.
➡️ Your messaging becomes more aligned with your audience.
➡️ Which allows you to be more strategic and focused as you create content.
Because when you don’t know the style, content pillar, or format your audience is more likely to check out your profile or click on a link, you’re guessing.
And when you’re guessing, all you are doing is using valuable time, resources, & energy on something that is missing potential clients.
You have to stop looking at interpreting your data as “one more thing to do” & start seeing it as spending time “doing what works”.
Because at the end of the day, you’ll end up saving yourself hours.
📝 What Now?
Start by telling yourself you DO have the data.
Now, it’s just time to start looking at it.
So instead of lying in bed at night wondering whether your newest post will get in front of the “right eyes”, you go to bed easy knowing your weekly content is strategic, not random.
You already have the information you need to make smarter decisions for your business.
All you need to do is start looking & asking questions.
This is exactly what we do inside The Data Drop.
