Strengthen your goal-setting strategy by pairing your goals with the right number. Use this 5-step formula to make progress you can actually track.
You already know adding a number is key to achieving your goals.
But…what number? And how do you figure it all out?
Here’s the exact 5-step process I recommend to pair your goals with numbers that keep you motivated and moving forward.
This simple shift makes your entire goal-setting game plan more effective from the get-go.
Step 1 - Write Out Your Goal
Yes, actually write it out.
Do it now! 😉
Grab a piece of paper or your notes app.
Then, take a second to put words to one of your current goals.
Step 2 - Define Success
Ask yourself this question:
“What does success look like for this goal?”
Then, get specific.
➡️ If you want to increase your number of email subscribers, how many?
➡️ If you want to increase your revenue, how much monthly?
➡️ If you want to increase the number of sales coming from your email list, how many per month are we talking?
👏 Be super clear. The more specific you are, the easier it is to make progress and hit your definition of success.
Step 3 - Find Your Anchor Number
Did you notice how all of those questions above ended?
With you answering with a number. 😉
That is the number that matters to your business.
That is the number that turns your vague goal into something measurable and achievable.
Why does this matter?
Because that anchor number defines success and gives you a benchmark to track your progress along the way.
Step 4 - Double Check Your Number
Now that you have a number in mind, it’s time for a gut-check.
Is the number you picked realistic for you right now?
Think about:
- The way you want to run your business
- Your current season of life
- The time & energy you can invest in this goal
🤔 And if you’re still not sure? Take your best guess.
Set a reminder to revisit & adjust (if needed) in a month or two.
Getting started & shifting what success looks like beats perfection paralysis. Every time.
Step 5 - Rewrite Your Goal
Now, rewrite your goal. This time, include your number with it.
You should be able to glance at your goal & instantly know:
- What you’re aiming for
- When you know you’ve made it
Bonus points if you included a timeline!
👉 “By the end of Q2…”
👉 “By the end of the month…”
Place your goal somewhere you will see it & be reminded of it often.
Transforming Real Goals
Let’s look at what this goal-setting strategy looks like in action:
Before: “Sign more clients this year” →
After: “Sign 8 new clients into my mastermind each quarter.”
Before: “Make more money this year” →
After: “Consistently bring in 8K months by the end of Q3.”
Before: “Convert more from my email list” →
After: “Land 5 clients per month from my email list.”
Before: “Show up on socials consistently this year” →
After: “Create 4 stories & 2 posts for Instagram each week.”
Before: “Start a podcast this year” →
After: “Release 1 podcast episode weekly for all of Q2.”
Each of these goals now has a clear finish line, a built-in action plan, and a way to track progress without killing momentum. 🙌
Don’t Stop There!
Attaching numbers to your goals is just the first step.
Once you know what you’re aiming for, it’s easier to spot the other numbers that influence that goal.
You didn’t think the numbers nerd would stop at one number, did you? 😉
Let’s revisit our podcast example.
To hit “1 episode per week”, you’ll probably need:
- A content planning system
- A batching schedule
- A way to track episode performance
That original number (1 episode a week) unlocks the rest of your strategy.
Before you know it, you’re not just setting a goal, you’re mapping out exactly how to achieve it.
What’s Next?
Don’t let your momentum stop you in this goal-setting process.
Now that your goals have numbers attached to them, it’s time to start tracking those numbers. ✏️
Because once you do, you’ll unlock powerful insights about your business that help you:
- Make stronger decisions
- Hit your income goals
- Take Fridays off (without the panic)
- Say yes to taking your kids to the park guilt-free
